A high-sided pontoon boat, for example, may need fenders positioned differently from a low-profile bowrider of similar length.
Line diameter needs enough strength and abrasion resistance for the boat and its normal conditions, while still being easy to handle and tie. Thicker is not automatically better if it is difficult to fit around cleats or awkward for family members to manage. Marine-grade dock line with suitable stretch is generally preferable to generic utility rope because it can absorb the repeated loading created by wakes and shifting water.
Fender size matters for the same reason. Undersized fenders can flatten under load and provide little protection when the boat presses against the dock. Larger fenders provide more cushioning, but they must suit the boat’s freeboard and be easy to store. For most recreational owners, the sensible choice is a kit sized for the boat with enough protection for the conditions it sees regularly, rather than the smallest option that works on a calm day.
Floating docks, fixed docks, and pilings
The dock itself changes the setup. Floating docks rise and fall with the water, so fender height usually needs less adjustment. Fixed docks are less forgiving when water levels change, and they may require longer fender lines or more careful placement to keep the fender where the hull needs it.
Pilings add another consideration. They can be rough, weathered, and highly abrasive, particularly where lines move with tide or wave action. Chafe protection and regular line inspection are especially worthwhile in these locations. If your slip is exposed to boat traffic or prevailing wind, spring lines should not be treated as optional extras. They help stop the boat from surging forward and aft when conditions become unsettled.
How to Set Up a Docking Kit Correctly
Start by identifying the places where your boat is most likely to meet the dock. On many boats, that means placing fenders near the widest section of the hull, with another toward the stern or bow as needed. The goal is to keep the hull from making direct contact, not to hang fenders at random intervals.
Set fender height so the center of the fender sits near the point of likely contact. On a floating dock, that setting may remain fairly consistent. On a fixed dock or in tidal water, check it more often. A fender that hangs too high can leave the lower hull exposed; one that hangs too low may not take any load at all.
Secure bow and stern lines with enough length to allow normal movement but not so much slack that the boat can strike the dock. Then add spring lines to control fore-and-aft motion. A forward spring generally runs from a point near the stern toward a dock cleat farther forward, while an aft spring runs from the bow toward a dock cleat farther back. Exact lead angles depend on the slip, but the purpose is simple: each line should resist a movement the other lines do not fully control.
Use cleats and properly rated dock hardware where available. Avoid tying critical lines to rails, handholds, or lightweight fittings not designed for docking loads. When using a cleat hitch, leave it neat and easy to release. A tangled line is inconvenient in calm weather and potentially unsafe when you need to depart quickly.
Common Mistakes That Lead to Dock Damage
The most common mistake is treating dock lines as permanent equipment. Sunlight, salt, abrasion, and repeated loading gradually weaken rope. Inspect lines at the start of the season and throughout it, looking closely at eye splices, knots, sections near cleats, and any point that rubs against a piling or dock edge. Replace lines with visible fraying, stiffness, flattened areas, or damaged stitching.
Another mistake is relying on only two lines. Bow and stern lines may hold a boat in place during calm conditions, but they often allow too much movement when wakes arrive. Adding spring lines can make a noticeable difference in a busy marina.
Fenders are also often left in one position for every situation. That may be fine for a familiar home slip, but rafted-up boats, fuel docks, guest slips, and high-sided fixed docks call for quick adjustment. Keep fender lines ready to move rather than tying them permanently in one spot.
Finally, do not assume a dock setup is correct because it looked fine when first tied up. Walk back after a few minutes. Watch how the boat sits when a wake passes. Check whether lines are rubbing, fenders are carrying load, and the boat remains clear of corners and pilings. Small adjustments made early can prevent expensive gelcoat repairs later.

Buying components one at a time can work when you already know the rope type, line lengths, fender sizes, and hardware your boat needs.
