Check the Trailer Before Buying
A rated strap is only as dependable as the points it connects to. Inspect the stern eyes on the boat and the trailer’s tie-down tabs, brackets, or crossmember attachment points. Look for cracking, rust, bent metal, loose bolts, and sharp edges that could cut into the webbing.
The strap should pull from the boat to the trailer at a useful downward and forward angle. This helps hold the hull firmly onto the bunks while resisting rearward movement. Avoid a setup where the straps pull almost straight sideways, rub against the hull, or cross over one another unless the trailer manufacturer specifically designed the trailer that way.
If your trailer does not have obvious transom strap mounting points, do not assume any convenient hole in the frame is suitable. How to Secure the Boat Correctly

Attach the other end to the trailer anchor point, making sure hooks are fully seated and any keeper clips close correctly. Most transom strap failures begin as small, visible problems. Saltwater residue left on hardware can corrode buckles and hooks. Sand trapped in a retractable housing can interfere with retraction. Webbing dragged across concrete can develop abrasion faster than many owners expect.
Before each trip, look for cuts, fraying, faded or stiff webbing, damaged stitching, bent hooks, and corrosion around the ratchet or buckle. Replace straps that show meaningful damage rather than trying to get one more season from them. A strap is inexpensive compared with the boat it is meant to restrain.
Also avoid relying on straps that are merely present instead of properly tensioned. Loose straps can allow repeated movement that wears the boat, trailer, and hardware even if nothing fails outright. Check them again after fuel stops, especially on long trips or after rough roads.
