A hard freeze can turn a perfectly good final trip of the season into a costly spring repair. Learning how to winterize outboard motor equipment correctly protects the fuel system, cooling passages, internal engine parts, and lower unit while your boat is laid up. The job is straightforward when you work in the right order and follow the instructions for your specific engine.

Winterization is not one universal procedure. A carbureted two-stroke, a fuel-injected two-stroke, and a modern four-stroke have different service needs. Your owner’s manual takes priority, particularly for fuel treatment, fogging, oil changes, and storage position. The steps below cover the practical work most recreational boat owners should plan for before cold weather arrives.

Start with the right supplies

Set aside enough time to do the work without rushing. You will typically need a fuel stabilizer approved for marine engines, fresh engine oil and a filter if your four-stroke calls for them, lower-unit gear lube, new drain-plug washers, a flushing device, basic hand tools, and clean rags. A fogging oil may also be required, depending on your engine and the manufacturer’s instructions.

A complete winterization and service kit can make this easier because the consumables are matched to the work rather than gathered one item at a time. Before buying supplies, confirm your engine’s model, horsepower, year, and whether it is two-stroke or four-stroke. Using the correct gear lube and filter matters more than choosing the most convenient bottle on the shelf.

Work outside or in a well-ventilated area. Keep fuel away from sparks and open flames, have a suitable container ready for used oil and gear lube, and dispose of all fluids through an approved recycling location.

How to winterize an outboard motor step by step

Stabilize the fuel before the last run

Fuel is often the first source of spring starting problems. Gasoline can degrade during storage, while ethanol-blended fuel can attract moisture and contribute to corrosion or phase separation. Add the correct amount of marine fuel stabilizer to the tank before your final run of the season.

For many boat owners, storing the tank nearly full is the practical choice because it reduces the air space where condensation can form. This advice can vary with tank type, local storage conditions, and the engine manufacturer, so check your manual. If you use a portable tank, inspect its cap, vent, and fuel line for damage before storage.

Run the engine long enough for treated fuel to reach the fuel lines, pump, filter, and injectors or carburetors. Ten to fifteen minutes is often sufficient, but use the manufacturer’s recommendation when available. Do not assume that adding stabilizer and immediately shutting down the engine has protected the entire fuel system.

Flush the cooling system thoroughly

Salt, silt, algae, and mineral deposits do not improve with time. Flush the engine with fresh water after the last use, even if you normally boat on freshwater. Attach approved flushing muffs securely over the water intakes, turn on the water, then start the engine according to the manual.

Always make sure water is flowing before starting. Keep an eye on the telltale stream and never leave the running engine unattended. Flush for the specified time, then shut the engine off before turning off the water supply.

Most outboards are designed to drain themselves when stored in the full-down vertical position. Do not use automotive antifreeze in an outboard cooling system unless your engine manufacturer specifically directs it. Proper drainage, not filling the engine with antifreeze, is the normal protection against freezing.

Change four-stroke engine oil and filter

If you have a four-stroke outboard, change the engine oil and filter at the interval set by the manufacturer. Many owners do this at winterization because used oil can contain acids, moisture, and combustion byproducts that should not sit in the engine for months.

Warm oil drains more completely, so this task is often done after flushing. Keep the engine level as directed, drain the oil into a suitable pan, replace the filter and sealing washer where applicable, and refill with the specified oil grade. Avoid overfilling. Check the dipstick after allowing the oil to settle, then inspect carefully for leaks.

Two-stroke engines do not have crankcase oil changes, but they may have a separate oil reservoir. Check the oil level and inspect the reservoir, cap, and supply lines for leaks or deterioration.

Replace lower-unit gear lube

Lower-unit service is one of the most valuable parts of winterizing an outboard. With the engine vertical, remove the lower drain screw first and then the upper vent screw. Let the lubricant drain into a pan.

Pay attention to what comes out. Clean, dark gear lube is normal after use. Milky oil may indicate water intrusion through a seal, while metal particles on the magnetic drain plug can point to gear wear. Either finding is a reason to arrange service before spring, not after the first launch.

Install new sealing washers if specified, then pump fresh marine gear lube in through the lower hole until it appears at the upper vent hole. Refit the upper screw first, then quickly remove the pump fitting and install the lower screw. This order limits oil loss and helps prevent air pockets.

Fog the engine only when your manual calls for it

Fogging coats internal components with protective oil during extended storage. It is common for many carbureted engines and some older two-strokes, but the procedure is not identical across models. Some modern fuel-injected outboards have a specific fogging method, while others do not recommend traditional aerosol fogging at all.

Follow the engine manual exactly. Spraying fogging oil into the wrong intake point or using too much can create starting and plug-fouling issues later. If you are uncertain, have this part completed by a qualified marine technician. The small cost is preferable to guessing with an expensive engine.

Check the propeller, anodes, and controls

With the engine off and the ignition key removed, inspect the propeller for fishing line, dents, cracks, or damage around the hub. Fishing line wrapped behind the propeller can damage prop-shaft seals and allow water into the gearcase. Remove the prop if you are comfortable doing so, inspect behind it, and apply the appropriate marine grease to the shaft before reinstalling.

Look over the sacrificial anodes as well. Replace anodes that are significantly depleted and make sure their contact surfaces are clean. Check steering movement, throttle and shift operation, fuel hoses, primer bulb, and visible wiring. Winter is a good time to identify a worn cable or cracked hose before the first busy weekend of the new season.

Care for the battery and electrical connections

Remove the battery from the boat if practical, especially when it will be stored in an unheated location. Clean the terminals, check the electrolyte level only if your battery design allows it, and connect it to a quality smart maintainer. A maintainer is different from a basic trickle charger because it monitors the battery and adjusts its output as needed.

Store the battery in a dry, protected area and recharge it as recommended through the winter. Also inspect battery cables, terminal covers, and main connections for corrosion. A boat can have a well-maintained engine and still fail to start in spring because of a weak battery or poor connection.

Store the outboard in the correct position

For storage, leave the outboard trimmed fully down in its normal vertical running position whenever possible. This helps remaining water drain from the cooling passages and reduces unnecessary strain on trim seals. If your storage arrangement requires a different position, consult the manual for approved alternatives.

Do not wrap the engine tightly in plastic. Moisture trapped under a non-breathable cover encourages corrosion and mildew. Use a properly fitted, breathable engine cover or boat cover that keeps rain, snow, and debris out while allowing air circulation. Check that the cowling is latched and that no water can collect around the engine.

If the boat is stored on a trailer, support it properly, secure it against theft, and make sure the cover does not create low spots where snow or rain can pool. A few minutes spent checking the boat after a storm can prevent water damage that has nothing to do with the motor itself.

Keep a simple spring-start record

Write down the date of winterization, engine hours, oil and filter changes, lower-unit service, fuel treatment, battery condition, and anything that needs attention before launch. Tape the note inside a storage compartment or keep it with your boat documents.

That record gives you a clear starting point when the weather turns. Instead of wondering what was done last fall, you can install the charged battery, inspect the motor, and focus on getting the family back on the water with confidence.
