The goal is straightforward: keep the hull from making hard contact with the dock, piling, neighboring boat, or seawall. Choosing fenders with enough diameter, length, and buoyancy gives you a useful safety margin instead of asking a small piece of vinyl to handle a large job.
What size fenders for boats is right?
For most recreational boats, start with the fender manufacturer's sizing guidance, then round up when your boat is heavy, has high freeboard, or regularly docks in exposed water.
